Schools to Pools – A Local Government Response to Reducing Barriers to Swimming and Water Safety Education

With almost half of Western Australian children under twelve unable to meet national swimming benchmarks and drowning deaths rising 36% above the ten-year average, the City of Stirling established a $50,000 Schools to Pools Grant to subsidise transport and pool entry costs for schools. Developed in collaboration with the Department of Education and Royal Life Saving WA, the program targets schools with the greatest need using socio-economic and attendance data to prioritise participation. This session explores the advocacy journey from Council resolution to program design, the challenges of balancing pool capacity and workforce, and early learnings from implementation.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the way organisations operate, offering leisure facility and sports managers powerful new tools to improve productivity, enhance decision-making and reduce administrative burden. This practical and engaging session will demonstrate how AI can be used across all areas of leisure and sports management, including customer service, marketing, strategic planning, governance, risk management, human resources, community engagement and operational reporting. Through real-world examples and demonstrations, participants will see how AI can act as a virtual assistant, analyst, communications specialist and strategic advisor, helping managers complete routine tasks faster while improving the quality and consistency of their work. Attendees will learn how to write effective AI prompts, leverage expert personas to generate higher-quality outputs, analyse data and stakeholder feedback, develop strategic plans, create marketing campaigns, prepare Board reports and support staff management processes. The session will also explore the risks, limitations and ethical considerations associated with AI, providing practical guidance for responsible adoption within sport and recreation organisations. Whether you are new to AI or already experimenting with its capabilities, participants will leave with a toolkit of practical AI applications and management prompts that can be implemented immediately to save time, improve decision-making and enhance organisational performance.

Psycho Social Hazards in the Workplace

Since changes to WA's Work Health and Safety laws came into effect in 2022, employers have been required to identify and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. While most organisations have well-established systems for managing physical risks, many are still working out what this means in practice. This session will explain the legislative requirements, explore common psychosocial hazards and provide practical guidance on how to assess and manage these risks. You'll leave with a clearer understanding of your obligations and practical ideas for creating a safer, healthier workplace for your team.
